Constructing Identity through the First Grade Textbook in Armenia:
Authors, Teachers and National Standards

She will discuss representation of (ethno)-national identity in the first grade textbook in Armenia. The author will present textbook analyses, the results of observations in Yerevan schools, interviews with teachers and the authors. Firstly, the set of national identity elements to be presented include the following main areas: geography, landscape and nature; state and various forms of statehood; language mostly represented through the Armenian letters and alphabet; religion, represented through churches, cross-stones, candles etc.;‘heroes’ and historical figures.
Secondly, the perspective of teachers will be presented through the interpretations of the teachers and their practices of delivering the textbook content to the students in classrooms. Interpretations and motivations of the authors while developing the textbook are the next perspective to be presented. Finally, national standards of education of Armenia have been reviewed to illustrate the state perspective on national identity.
